The History of the Department of Mathematics, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College, is as old as the inception of the college itself on 10th August, 1968 and hence stands to be a privileged department.
The college had its root in the form of the twin colleges named as Birla College of Science and Birla College of Education set up together under the management of Birla Group in the name of Vidyamandir Society and was located at 1, Moira Street, Kolkata – 700017 (the present Birla High School near Mintu Park). The two Institutions were later amalgamated into one college under the name of Birla College of Science and Education in the same year.
With effect from 1st July, 1987, the college has been renamed after one of the greatest scientists of all times, Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose. The College has been affiliated to the University of Calcutta since its inception and was run by the Governing Body since 1983, statutorily formed under Statute 93 of the Calcutta University first Statutes, 1979. The college has been also enlisted under UGC Act 2f and 12B. At present the College is also accredited by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC).
The college has been co-educational with the medium of instruction being English and provides inclusive education to the students from all sections of society, irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, gender and socio-economic background, also from other states and even from abroad in some cases. The college administration has been ensuring that the education of the students from financially weaker sections goes unhindered by providing full/half-student freeship in a transparent and time bound manner depending on their requirements.
The college shifted to the present address in the middle of the seventies with the first Head of the Department of Mathematics as Dr. Krishna Mohan Bhargava. Dr. Bhargava used his knowledge, wisdom and administrative acumen to nurture his long-cherished dream of evolving the department as the centre of learning the analytical skills and mathematical techniques besides qualifying graduates so that they could be able to create their own space in various fields like academics, science, entrepreneurship, etc. apart from cracking various competitive examinations like banking, state and central services, MBA, MCA, etc.
Dr. Bhargava as the longest serving Head of the Department of Mathematics took various initiatives to create permanent posts with the active support of the existing principals/TICs and ensured the faster employment of the highly qualified dedicated faculty through the West Bengal College Service Commission for catering to the needs of newly introduced Mathematics (Honours) course along with the existing Mathematics (General) and Higher Secondary courses.
In this league, Dr. Kalpana Banerjee was appointed as a Lecturer in Mathematics and she remained with the department for a brief period of time and later migrated to the USA permanently. After her departure, Prof. Nilmoni Sinharoy (1981) joined the department as a Lecturer in Mathematics. He was a very dedicated, knowledgeable, soft-spoken, meticulous, easily-accessible great teacher and born administrator too. He was very popular among his students and teaching & non-teaching fraternity alike. He used to teach Algebra, Calculus, among other branches of Mathematics through his well-planned and high quality study materials of which the author himself had the opportunity to witness such activities as a proud colleague of this great teacher. He was a great motivator. His contribution to the college can be fathomed to the fact that he led the team of college staff for successfully fighting the long-drawn land-related disputes of the college and finally resolved when the state government took acquisition of the land and handed it over to the college authority.
In this aspect, it needs to be mentioned that the opposite parties showed dissent to the aforesaid state government monitored resolution and moved to Calcutta High Court and later the Supreme Court at the time of Principal, Dr. Tarit Kumar Majumder. Dr. Majumder, a great mathematician himself, fondly took undergraduate mathematics classes dovetailing with his administrative duties as principal. Towards the end of his career, the mathematician-principal worked day and night and one day his long-cherished dream of creating a multi-storied building at the existing old building could become a partial reality when he led the foundation stone of the first wing of the college building on 14th December, 2012.
The land-related issues got finally resolved under the active leadership of the present Principal, Dr. Purna Chandra Maity who pursued the case vigorously and successfully at the Supreme Court getting the land-related issues completely resolved on 28th February, 2017, within one year of his joining the college in 2016, and also ensured that the remaining wing of the college could be completed at the incredibly fastest pace.
Later Prof. Ashutosh Chakraborty joined the department on 24th December, 1984 and served till 2005. He displayed a unique style of teaching through greater interactions and was greatly admired by his students within a short span of time. He used to teach LPP, Mechanics, Vector & Tensor Analysis, etc. His inimitable style of teaching also impacted the other spheres of college activities. During the difficult times of the college while fighting for its existence especially facing land-related disputes, Prof. Chakraborty dons the hat of Bursar (a type of chief finance officer) for over a decade and streamlined and computerized the college financial system bringing transparency towards the end of the nineties much earlier than many other colleges in the West Bengal under the active support from the then Principal, Dr. Debotosh Majumdar.
The knowledgeable, soft-spoken Dr. Rina Sarkar (1985) had been appointed. She was very popular among her students and always took extra care to ensure that the doubts of students get cleared. Students used to flock to her after her classes. She used to teach Real Analysis, Calculus, Numerical Analysis etc.
In line with the expansion of the department and catering to the needs of one of the most-sought after colleges located in the heart of Kolkata having its students from a wide cross-section of society, Dr. Biswanath Bhattacharya joined the college in mid-eighties. However, Dr. Bhattacharya later joined the Jadavpur University and his post was later filled by Prof. Runa Das. She joined the Department of Mathematics in 1988 and served till 2012. She usually taught Differential Equations, Dynamics, etc. and students used to follow her to the department after her classes and used to patiently clear their doubts. There are numerous instances where students with their University related issues flocked to Prof. Das and she usually solved the CU related problems of students with just phone calls due to the highest regards showered on her by CU officials.
She displayed great administrative acumen and helped the existence of the college to remain intact with a great devotion by directly spearheading the battle of survival arising out of land-related issues to the highest echelons of politico-administrative leadership of the state. She used to openly admit her weaknesses and tendered frank objective assessments of others irrespective of her personal relationships, a rare quality of a human being.
After the retirement of Dr. Bhargava, Dr. Kanan Majumdar joined the Mathematics Department on 7th September, 2001. She had been a very dedicated, knowledgeable, soft-spoken, student friendly great teacher who apart from teaching the subject always enquired about students’ socio-economic background and used to discuss these issues with the departmental teachers for their resolution. She also used to share books to such students from her personal collection who could not afford to buy them. She used to teach Geometry, Real Analysis, etc. She retired from the college in 2013.
Prof. Anupam Shikari joined the department in the year 2015 and remained with the department till 2016. Prof. Shikari was a very talented and motivated young man and taught students in his own unique style of teaching and attracted students towards him. He used to teach Algebra, Numerical Analysis etc.
A department is recognised not simply by our accounts of facts but by our students’ achievements that make us proud and always give us immense satisfaction.
A very few notable alumni of the department are given here:
Dr. Sanjeeb Basu did both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Department of Pure Mathematics and employed in a State Government College
Dr. Rajdeep Bakshi did his Ph.D. in Management and is a great motivator and management guru. He is also a management consultant rendering his services to numerous companies.

We are planning to use actively the hybrid mode of teaching, both physical and virtual modes, by going through live streaming/uploading the classroom videos and study materials on popular YouTube, Facebook, LMS, Google Classroom, Google Meet/Zoom, etc. platforms to integrate the latest technological advancements in our teaching-learning process reaching every student all the time and make them ever confident.
A Crisp and Fuzzy Inventory Model for a Two-Storage Management System Under a Linear Trend in Demand: A Structural Review,
International Journal of Advanced Research in Science,
Engineering and Technology
Vol. 11, Issue 3, March 2024
ABSTRACT: The present paper deals with the development of an inventory model under crisp (deterministic) and Fuzzy (uncertainty) environment by considering the facilities of a two-storage named Owned Storage (OS) and Rented Storage (RS). A linear trend in demand is incorporated in the present model assuming constant deteriorating items in both OS and RS. The owned storage stands with finite capacity and the rented storage has large capacity of items. The total inventory costs for both crisp model and fuzzy model are derived. Signed Distance Method (SDM) is used to defuzzify the total cost function. Two illustrations are given for both the models separately. A sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution towards the changes of the system parameters is furnished. A pictorial presentation of the inventory cost with time is given for both the models. Lastly a structural review is demonstrated on the basis of the observation of the outcomes of the solution and pictorial scenario.
KEY WORDS: Inventory, crisp, fuzzy, deterioration, linear trend, owned storage, rented storage and defuzzify.
